
LBSU Track & Field Get Ready for the Big West Championships

LBSU prepare for the championships.
LONG BEACH, Calif.- Long Beach State will gear up and face the entirety of the Big West this weekend at the 2019 Big West Championships. Action will take place Friday, May 10 and Saturday, May 11 in Santa Barbara as this year's meet is hosted by UC Santa Barbara.
The men's program comes into the championships in second overall after a strong performance in the decathlon last week. Senior John Broadhead led the Beach with a second place finish and score of 7,293 points, the fifth best total in school history.
LBSU will have over 60 athletes competing over the course of two days at the Big West Championships. Field event are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. both days, while the track events start at 2:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
In the field, their will be eight events with finals scheduled on Friday, including the men's hammer throw featuring current Big West runner-up Nicholas Hudson, senior Josh Carr, sophomore Sebastian Coleman, sophomore Ryan Coy, and junior Charlie Vernoy. Hudson is one of two competitors to throw over 200 feet in the conference and is ranked 35th in the nation.
More finals that will be contested Friday include the men's long jump with two-time Big West champion Kemonie Briggs scheduled to compete in the event. In the women's high jump will be senior Bria Palmer, going after her fifth consecutive win of the season and the championship title.
The Beach will compete in every track event held Friday for the prelims, with expectations of advancing to Saturday's finals.
Senior Courtne' Davis will compete in her final Conference meet this weekend in the 100, 200, and 4x100m relay. Davis holds the lead in both the 100 and 200m going into the championships. The LBSU women's 4x100m relay team of Davis, Madison Golden, Azaria Hill, and Skylin Harbin is also No.1 with a season-best time of 44.94. Shalee Reynolds and LeNaya Griffin will compete in the 400m and are in contention to score big points.
For the men on the track, junior Kent Harris enters with the No.2 time in the 100m and No. 6 time in the 200m. Teammates Briggs and Faris Babineaux, will also be competing in the 200m and 400m dash as the senior is currently ranked second and third in the conference. Braedon Kraft will compete exclusively in the 800m, currently in position to score with a sixth place ranking. Harris and Briggs will be apart of the 4x100m relay team, and will be joined by Femi Ajose and Faris Babineaux.
Final day field action will feature the women's hammer throw, men's high jump, and both triple jumps as crowded events for the Beach. De'Ondra Young will compete in the hammer, along side teammates Erykah McNairy, Crystal Rodriguez, Amanda Truong, and Samantha Perez. Senior Vincent Calhoun returns for the championships, competing in the high jump with the current No.1 ranking.
Action Saturday will conclude on the field with Carr and Hudson competing in the men's discus, while the 4x400m relay teams will try to close out the meet with victories. Live results will be available all weekend through Finished Results.
