
Broadhead Claims Podium Finish; Beach Decathletes Open up the Big West Championships With 11 Points

Broadhead places second in the decathlon at the Big West Championships.
SANTA BARBARA, Calif.- Long Beach State decathletes and heptathletes wrap up competition at the 2019 Big West Conference Championships. Senior John Broadhead improved on his position from day one, finishing second in the competition to claim a spot on the podium.
Broadhead showed consistency throughout day two of competition, climbing up the record books to claim the fourth best score of all-time with a new personal-best of 7,293 points. The senior improved on his score by over 195 points. Junior Derreck Affor finished in seventh place, improving on his PR with a score of 6,586, also earning points for the Beach as they currently hold the No.3 spot with 11 points after the first event of the Big West Championships.
In the javelin, Broadhead shined and made a big throw, finishing in second place in the event with a career-best of 57.35m (188-02.00) to slide up the ranks in the field of competitors. Affor also recorded a PR in the event, unleashing a throw of 49.20m (161-05.00), and ran to a PR in the 1500, finishing with a time of 5:05.19.
Senior Herman Day placed top four in six of 10 events, finishing in eighth overall with 6,391 points. Day had a solid performance in the javelin, where he threw to a mark of 54.09m (177-05.00) to place fourth in that event. In the first event of the day, Devon Alvarado led the Beach in the 110m hurdles, clocking a time of 14.67 to place third in the event and 12th overall.
Junior Sydney Barnes improves from day one, finishing the heptathlon in sixth place with four out of seven PR's throughout the competition. Barnes improved her heptathlon score by 271 points, finishing with a total of 4,532 points. The junior made her biggest mark in the javelin, placing fourth in the event with a personal-best throw of 35.33m (115-11.00). Barnes was also just off her PR in the long jump, leaping to a mark of 18-01.00 to place sixth in that event.
Teammate Kaylee Shoemaker also made a huge improvement on her score by over 700 points to finish eighth in the competition with a total of 4,371 points. Shoemaker hit a huge mark in the javelin throw, placing second in the event with unleashing a new personal-best of 129-02.00.
The remainder of Long Beach State's Track and Field team will return to Santa Barbara in one week for the other events as part of the 2019 Big West Championship on May 10 and 11.
