Seminaris Tosses Shutout as Dirtbags Drop Hawai’i, 3-0

Sophomore lefty Adam Seminaris turned in his best career start on Thursday night, going the distance to shut out Hawai’i, 3-0, on ESPN3. Seminaris needed just 94 pitches to toss the complete game and was just three batters over the minimum. He allowed five singles and struck out seven in the win.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Thanks to an absolute gem from starter Adam Seminaris, Long Beach State (12-41, 6-16 Big West) made quick work of Hawai'i (20-28, 8-14 Big West) on Thursday night. The Dirtbags took the series opener from the Warriors, 3-0, thanks to a complete game shutout from their sophomore lefty.
Seminaris faced just three batters over the minimum, scattering five singles and collecting seven strikeouts. It's the first time Seminaris has pitched a complete game in his career, and it's also the first CG of the season for Long Beach State. The last time a Dirtbags pitcher tossed a complete game (or a shutout) was back on May 26, 2018, as Clayton Andrews went the distance without allowing a run to Cal State Fullerton in the penultimate game of the 2018 season.
Junior Jacob Hughey led the way for the offense with his fifth three-hit game of the season. The junior first baseman was 3-for-4 with a double and scored a pair of runs. Chris Jimenez and Chase Luttrell had the other two hits for LBSU and Victor Carlino logged a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to record the only RBI of the night.
The Dirtbags game Seminaris a lead in the bottom of the first inning as Hughey came in to score. He singled with one out and came home thanks to a passed ball and a wild pitch. The Dirtbags added insurance runs in both the seventh and eighth innings, with Carlino's sac fly bringing in the first run and a double play with men at the corners making it 3-0 in the eighth.
Senior Brooks Stotler played in his final game for the Dirtbags as he will be away from the team the rest of the weekend. In his final plate appearance in the seventh, Stotler unselfishly laid down his 29th career sacrifice bunt to set up the sac fly by Carlino.
With the help of a runner caught stealing and a double play, Seminaris faced the minimum through six frames on Thursday. He retired the first 10 men he faced in order, and recorded 16 ground ball outs compared to just two in the air. He also pounded the strike zone with 70 of his 94 pitches going for strikes. He also set a tremendous pace, as Thursday's game took just 2:01 to complete. Only three Dirtbags games since 1989 have been played faster than Thursday's win, which is now tied with a game vs. Cal on Feb. 25, 2012 as the fourth-fastest in modern Dirtbags history.
LBSU will look to win the series on Friday with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. If time permits, there will be postgame fireworks after the game. Junior Nick Avila (0-5, 3.99 ERA) starts for the Dirtbags, facing RHP Aaron Davenport (2-5, 4.80 ERA) for Hawai'i.
