LAST TIME OUT
• Long Beach State suffered a sweep against rivals Cal State Fullerton, scoring just three runs combined over the weekend. It's the first time since 2015 that the Dirtbags didn't win the series at Goodwin Field and it means the Dirtbags will go winless on the road in conference play this season.
• LBSU got strong performances from the starting pitchers in each of the first two games, as neither Adam Seminaris nor Nick Avila allowed an earned run in 12.1 innings against the Titans. Unfortunately, their efforts were undone by some costly errors and late offense by the Titans. Over those first two contests, Cal State Fullerton outscored the Dirtbags 10-1 in the seventh inning and later.
• Sophomore C Chris Jimenez is currently on a five-game hitting streak, and is hitting .315 during Big West play. He has drawn nine walks and struck out just eight times in 54 at bats against conference opponents, posting a team-best .413 on-base percentage.
• Junior Jacob Hughey is hitting .341 during Big West action, leading the team with 28 hits and 10 runs scored in 21 starts. For the season overall, Hughey is hitting a team-high .311 while leading the squad in hits (55), RBIs (22), and doubles (12). The Long Beach native also has 14 multi-hit games this season to comfortably lead the team.
SCOUTING THE WARRIORS
• Hawai'i has not won a road series this year, going 6-9 away from the islands in 2019. The Warriors are just 2-7 in their last nine contests, suffering a sweep at home against first-place UC Santa Barbara last weekend.
• Senior INF Maaki Yamazaki is Hawai'i's leading hitter, posting a .312 average with 23 RBIs. Freshman CF Scotty Scott is hitting .298 and has a team-best 24 walks to help his .390 on-base percentage. Scott is also the team leader with 35 runs scored and six stolen bases from the leadoff spot. Senior SS Ethan Lopez leads the Warriors with 13 doubles, five home runs, and 41 RBIs this season.
• Junior Dylan Thomas is the top bullpen arm for Hawai'i, posting a 4-3 record with a 2.08 ERA in 18 total appearances. He also leads the team with four saves and has collected 57 strikeouts in 52 IP.
• The Dirtbags have won three consecutive series against Hawai'i, and swept the Warriors on their last trip to Long Beach. The Dirtbags hold a 17-8 advantage on Hawai'i in the all-time series.
ALL HANDS ON DECK
• Seventeen position players have appeared in 20 or more games and recorded at least 30 at-bats this season for the Dirtbags, with 16 of them making 10 or more starts.
• The Dirtbags have used four or more different starters at every position except shortstop. Long Beach State has sent out seven different starting left fielders this season and nine different DH's.
• On the mound, eight different pitchers have recorded a start for the Dirtbags, with each of them making three or more. LBSU has used 13 pitchers overall, with each of them tossing at least 10 innings.
LB IN MLB
• Long Beach State had more former players in the big leagues than any other college or university from 2010-17, with 13 MLB representatives in 2018, again placing the Dirtbags among the nation's leaders.
• Three Dirtbags made their MLB debuts last season, all in the span of two weeks. RHP Drew Gagnon debuted for the Mets on July 10, followed by infielder Garrett Hampson's debut on July 21 for the Rockies and INF Jeff McNeil on July 24 for the Mets.
• The 2019 MLB season got underway with 10 former Dirtbags featured on Opening Day rosters to start the year: Troy Tulowitzki (Yankees), Evan Longoria (Giants), Jason Vargas (Mets), Bryan Shaw (Rockies), Nick Vincent (Giants), Marco Estrada (A's), Jared Hughes (Reds), Matt Duffy (Rays), Shane Carle (Braves), Garrett Hampson (Rockies), and Jeff McNeil (Mets).
• RHP Drew Gagnon made his season debut with the New York Mets on Apr. 16, giving Long Beach State 11 representatives on big league rosters. That puts LBSU one ahead of Cal State Fullerton for the nation's lead.
• Long Beach State also has representation among the coaching ranks as former players Brandon Hyde and Jeremy Reed are in their first years serving key roles in their respective dugouts. Hyde is the manager of the Baltimore Orioles and Reed is the hitting coach for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
