Hilt-Costello Coach of the Year, Rutkowska Freshman Of The Year For Big West Conference

The champions were well-represented with five of Long Beach State’s eight players receiving recognition.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State Women's Tennis was well represented as the Big West Conference announced the 2019 Women's Tennis All-Conference Teams, winning two top honors as well as placing five players on individual teams after a tremendous regular season and tournament.
Head Coach Jenny Hilt-Costello was named the Big West Coach of the Year for the ninth time in her tenure at the Beach after leading LBSU to a 13th Big West Tournament title. Hilt-Costello earned the honor for the first time since 2014 after leading the Beach to a 12th championship in the last 16 seasons at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
Top honors also went to Wiktoria Rutkowsa who was named the Big West Freshman of the Year. Rutkowska played at No. 1 in both singles and doubles throughout the year for Long Beach State, becoming the seventh Beach player in the 15-year history of the award to earn the honor.
Rutkowska was also picked first-team All-Big West in both singles and doubles, becoming the first Long Beach State player since Hannah Grady to earn a top honor as well as first-team accolades in both singles and doubles. Freshman Dominuque Meyer joined Rutkowska on the first team in doubles as the freshman duo competed at No. 1 throughout the season.
Also earning first-team honors was a third freshman in Emma Bardet. Baredet went 10-7 in dual match play, including a crucial win to close out the Big West Tournament championship against Hawai'i.
Junior Natalia Munoz was a double honoree in singles and doubles, joining Rutkowska in that distinction. Munoz has piled up 27 wins overall in singles in 2018-19 and went 16-3 in dual matches at No. 3, including winning six straight matches to close out the season, earning second-team honors.
Munoz also found great success in doubles with Lalita Devarakonda as the pair earned second-team honors. The duo were dominant on the year, going 16-3 in dual matches and 6-1 in Big West play, including winning all three of their matches in the Big West Tournament.
As the tournament champions, Long Beach State advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 13th time in school history. The Beach will face No. 16 Cal in the opening round Friday, May 3 at 10 a.m. in Malibu, Calif.
