
LBSU Begins Big West Championship Journey this Weekend with the Decathlon and Heptathlon

Decathlon and Heptathlon begin opening weekend of Big West Championships.
LONG BEACH, CALIF. – In the first of two weekends of the Big West Conference Championships hosted this year by UC Santa Barbara, Long Beach State will send four decathletes and two heptathletes to get the postseason going for Track & Field.
Seniors Herman Day, John Broadhead, and juniors Derreck Affor, and Devon Alvarado will represent the Beach, while juniors Sydney Barnes and Kaylee Shoemaker represent for the women.
The quartet has competed in one decathlon this season, with Day coming out with the top score in that competition and No. 1 leading mark in the Big West Conference. Day broke his own stadium record and collected a total of 7,410 points, earning the third
spot on the all-time list. He is also listed as 10th in the West Region, and 16th in the nation.
John Broadhead finished top four in seven out of 10 events at the UCR Spring Track Classic, finishing second overall with a total of 6,660 points. Broadhead holds the No.7 spot on the all-time list, and is currently No. 5 in the Big West, and No. 32 in the West Region.
Junior Derreck Affor put up a score of 6,428 points to place third in the event and break his life-time best by over 600 points, while teammate Devon Alvarado finished with 6,195 points to place fifth for the Beach.
In the heptathlon, Sydney Barnes is currently ranked No. 6 going into this weekend's Championships with a total of 4,261 points, while teammate Kaylee Shoemaker follows closely behind in eighth with 3,659 points
The men are scheduled to begin competition at noon on Friday, starting with the 100 meter dash, while the women will start at 12:30 p.m. in the 100m hurdles.
Following the conclusion of Saturday's Decathlon, the rest of the squad will begin its final preparation for the Big West Championships, as the remainder of the events will be held on Friday, May 10 and Saturday, May 11, also in Santa Barbara.
