
Broadhead Leads the Beach in Decathlon After Day One

Broadhead is currently third after day one of the decathlon.
SANTA BARBARA, Calif.- Senior John Broadhead leads the four Long Beach State men competitors in the decathlon and the rest of the field at the 2019 Big West Championships, ending day one in third place with a total of 3,753 points.
The senior finished no lower than seventh on the first day of competition. Broadhead recorded a personal-best time in the 400m at 50.10, ran 11:32 in the 100m, jumped 6.79m (22-03.25) in the long jump, threw 11.95m (39-02.25) in the shot put, and cleared 1.98m (6-06.00) in the high jump.
Junior Derreck Affor finished the days competition in sixth, recording three personal-bests in the event. The junior clocked a time of 11.17 in the 100m to place third, jumped 22-09.25 in the long jump, unleashed a throw of 10.69m (35-01.00) in the shot put, cleared 6-02.25 in the high jump, and ran 52.27 in the 400m.
Herman Day placed in the top two in the long jump, shot put, and high jump. The senior was just of his personal best with a jump 7.01m (23-00.00), and unleashed a personal-best throw of 14.47m (47-05.75). He also finished with a clearance of 2.01m (6-07.00) in the high jump.
Devon Alvarado rounded out the LBSU decathletes, following closely behind Day with a total of 3,414 points to hold the ninth spot after day one. Alvarado set new career highs in the 100m, and high jump, and had his best finish of the day in the 400m, finishing fifth place with a time of 51.32.
On the women's side, junior Sydney Barnes finished up day one of the heptathlon in seventh place. Barnes placed in the top nine in all four events and recorded new personal-bests in the 100m hurdles and 200m. Kaylee Shoemaker followed closely behind in eighth, also finishing with PR's in the 100m hurdles and 200 after the first day of competition.
Day two of the decathlon and heptathlon will begin once again at 12:00 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. in Santa Barbara. The day begins with the men's 110m hurdles and women's long jump and concludes with the 1500m and 800m run in the evening.
