Dirtbags Hang On For Midweek Win at San Diego, 5-4

4/9/2019 10:51:00 PM | Baseball

Long Beach State picked up its second consecutive midweek road win with a 5-4 victory over San Diego on Tuesday night. The Dirtbags led 5-0 after three innings and that proved to be enough as freshman Alfredo Ruiz earned his first career win on the mound and John Sheaks picked up his first career save.

SAN DIEGO – A 5-0 lead after three innings proved to be enough for Long Beach State (5-26) in a 5-4 win at San Diego (21-12) at Fowler Park on Tuesday night. Freshman Alfredo Ruiz earned his first career win after tossing five solid innings and senior John Sheaks notched his first career save by recording the final five outs for the Dirtbags.

Three Dirtbags had multi-hit games in the win, including junior catcher Cole Joy who had a big two-run single in the third inning to give Long Beach State the 5-0 advantage. Junior Jacob Hughey and freshman Chase Luttrell had identical stat lines as they were each 2-for-4 with an RBI double and a run scored. Junior Victor Carlino got his first start at designated hitter and reached safely three times, scoring once.

LBSU struck for two runs in the first on back-to-back RBI doubles from Hughey and Luttrell. Laine Huffman was hit by a pitch to start the game and represented the first run of the night as Hughey increased his team lead in RBIs with No. 15 on the year.

The Dirtbags went back to work with a two-out rally in the third inning, which started with a single to right by Luttrell on a 3-2 pitch. Carlino then had a terrific 11-pitch plate appearance that ended in an HBP after he fouled off six straight pitches. After Tyler Porter worked an eight-pitch walk and Luttrell scored on a wild pitch, Joy delivered the two-run single to left center to put the Dirtbags up by a handful.

Ruiz registered the longest start of his career, going five full innings allowing two runs on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts. He then handed it over to the bullpen, and four pitchers were able to preserve the three-run lead.

San Diego had the potential tying run 90 feet away in the ninth, but with the infield in the DIrtbags were able to cut down the runner at the plate. Huffman fielded a one-hopper at second base and fired a strike to Dominic Campeau, who applied an emphatic tag at home plate to keep the lead intact. Sheaks then stranded a pair of runners on base with a fly ball to left.

The Dirtbags will look to roll the win into Big West play as CSUN will visit Blair Field this weekend. First pitch on Friday night is setd for 6 p.m. with Friday Night Fireworks scheduled postgame.
