UC Santa Barbara Downs Long Beach State, 9-7

LBSU kept the game close, but couldn’t overcome a late deficit against the Gauchos in the Big West Tournament quarterfinals.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State was down 7-4 entering the fourth quarter, but senior Tori Morrissey brought the Beach within two as she scored at the 6:55 mark. UC Santa Barbara would score shortly after to bring back the lead up to three. LBSU and UCSB would exchange goals in the closing minutes as LBSU would eventually fall 9-7. Freshman Orsi Hertzka Morrissey led the way for the Beach with two goals apiece.
UC Santa Barbara opened the quarterfinal of the Big West tournament with a 2-0 lead against the Beach. Freshman Sarah Barker inched LBSU with her first goal of the game to make it 2-1 right before the end of the first quarter.
Hertzka tied the Beach and the Gauchos in the second quarter as she scored at the 7:01 mark. A couple goals later, junior Marilia Mimidi nailed her first goal of the game making it 3-3. UC Santa Barbara struck twice more before the end of the half putting themselves up 5-3.
The Gauchos would extend their lead in the third quarter going up by as many as three, but senior Annabel Harman responded to pull the Beach back within two. LBSU and UCSB traded goals later in the game as the Beach fell 9-7.
Hertzka brought her goal total to 69 and making her the sole possessor of the second slot for most goals scored in a single season in LBSU history. Morrissey now has 32 goals on the season along with 30 assists. The 30 assists moves the senior to six most all-time in LBSU history in a single season. Mimidi adds up to 43 goals while Harman tallies 34 goals. Barker's latest addition put her at 35 goals on the season.
In the second match, the CSUN Matadors took on the UC Davis Aggies. The Aggies came out victorious in the match as they took down the Matadors, 15-8. With the loss, CSUN and Long Beach State will face off in the fifth-place match at 11 a.m. UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine will battle it out at 1 p.m. for a chance to advance to the championship game. UC Davis and Hawai'i confront each other at 3 p.m. for the second spot in the championship match.
