LBSU fought against CSUN on Saturday morning for fifth place in the Big West Tournament.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – As time wound down in the fourth quarter, LBSU and CSUN were locked and faced overtime. Long Beach State and the Matadors continued their fight into the second OT period tied, but freshman Orsi Hertzka would change that. Hertzka scored her third goal of the game in the second OT as the Beach were awarded a penalty shot and eventually won, 7-6. Hertzka led the Beach in scoring with her hat trick on the day.

The game between the two foes didn't see action until late in the first period. Hertzka scored first for the Beach to give them the lead, but CSUN responded with seconds left in the first period to tie the game back up.

CSUN saw daylight in the opening minutes of the second quarter but LBSU responded with two straight goals from senior Annabel Harman and sophomore Olivia Grim. CSUN struck later in the quarter to erase the Beach lead, but junior Marilia Mimidi gave the Beach the advantage entering the half at 4-3.

LBSU and CSUN traded goals in the second quarter with Mimidi and Hertka striking for the Beach. LBSU held onto the lead entering the fourth quarter, 6-5. CSUN played their way back into the game tying things up at the 4:38 mark of the fourth quarter.

The Beach fought hard in the closing minutes to take the advantage, although could not score. LBSU found themselves in the second OT where Hertzka took care of an opportunity to seal the victory for the Beach with a penalty. LBSU went up 7-6 and closed the Matadors out to tally their final win of the 2019 season.

Hertzka finished the season with 72 goals making it the second most all-time in a season for goals scored in LBSU history. Mimidi finished with 45 goals, while both freshman Sarah Barker and Harman finished with 35 goals. Senior Tori Morrissey ended her 2019 campaign with 32 goals and 30 assists. Morrissey's 30 assists place her sixth in LBSU history for assists in a single season.

Later in the day, UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara played for a spot in the championship game with the Anteaters overpowering the Gauchos, 5-2. Afterwards, Hawai'i and UC Davis tangoed for the second spot in the championship game in which the Rainbow Wahine took down the Aggies, 14-7.
