LAST TIME OUT
•   Long Beach State suffered a sweep at the hands of Cal Poly over the weekend, losing the series finale in heartbreaking fashion. The Dirtbags were able to erase a 4-0 first-inning deficit and had the bases loaded with no outs in the ninth inning but couldn't push a run in to extend the game, suffering a 5-4 loss to the Mustangs.
•   Junior Jacob Hughey extended his hitting streak to seven games, which is the longest hitting streak of the season by a Dirtbags hitter. The first baseman has hits in 10 of his last 11 games, with seven multi-hit games in that stretch. During his active seven-game hitting streak, he is 13-for-29 (.448) with six runs, four RBIs, two doubles and two stolen bases.
•   Freshman Kaden Hogan busted out on Sunday with his first career home run, part of a three-hit game for the shortstop. He has started the last 19 games, with all but one of those coming at shortstop. He has hits in 11 of those games including four multi-hit efforts.

SCOUTING THE LIONS
•   LMU is coming off a series loss on the road at Saint Mary's, winning just the middle game, 5-4. The Lions are 12-6 in conference play which has them in a three-way tie for first place with Gonzaga and San Francisco. LMU is a solid 15-5 at home this season compared to a 9-10 road record.
•   The Lions offense runs through junior 1B Trevin Esquerra, who has put up monster numbers this season. He's hitting .319 with an impressive 14 home runs and 47 RBIs, easily leading the team in both categories. The rest of the team has just three homers and the next-highest RBI total on the team is 20.  Junior SS Nick Sogard is hitting a team-best .329 with an impressive 21 stolen bases in 24 attempts out of the leadoff spot. His .443 on-base percentage is also tops on the team.
•   Probable starter Nate Madole will be making his third career start on Tuesday. The freshman lefty has allowed nine runs (seven earned) with two walks and six strikeouts in 7.2 innings this year. Long Beach State is just 1-9 against left-handed starting pitchers this season.
•   In the two meetings last season, the home team won each contest. LMU was a 5-4 winner in 10 innings at home before the Dirtbags earned a 9-6 victory in Long Beach. The Dirtbags own an 87-51-2 advantage in the all-time series with the Lions.

LB IN MLB
•   Long Beach State had more former players in the big leagues than any other college or university from 2010-17, with 13 MLB representatives in 2018, again placing the Dirtbags among the nation's leaders.
•   Three Dirtbags made their MLB debuts last season, all in the span of two weeks. RHP Drew Gagnon debuted for the Mets on July 10, followed by infielder Garrett Hampson's debut on July 21 for the Rockies and INF Jeff McNeil on July 24 for the Mets.
•   The 2019 MLB season got underway with 10 former Dirtbags featured on Opening Day rosters to start the year: Troy Tulowitzki (Yankees), Evan Longoria (Giants), Jason Vargas (Mets), Bryan Shaw (Rockies), Nick Vincent (Giants), Marco Estrada (A's), Jared Hughes (Reds), Matt Duffy (Rays), Shane Carle (Braves), Garrett Hampson (Rockies), and Jeff McNeil (Mets).
•   RHP Drew Gagnon made his season debut with the New York Mets on Apr. 16, giving Long Beach State 11 representatives on big league rosters. That puts LBSU one ahead of Cal State Fullerton for the nation's lead.
•             Long Beach State also has representation among the coaching ranks as former players Brandon Hyde and Jeremy Reed are in their first years serving key roles in their respective dugouts. Hyde is the manager of the Baltimore Orioles and Reed is the hitting coach for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
