Strong Defensive Effort Comes Up Short Against UC Santa Barbara

LBSU held UC Santa Barbara to six goals but fell, 6-3.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Freshman Orsi Hertzka scored a pair of goals in the regular season finale for the Beach, but a solid defensive effort and those goals weren't enough in a 6-3 defeat on the road at No. 11 UC Santa Barbara.

A couple days after falling on senior night, No. 13 LBSU (15-14, 1-4) looked to bounce back in the season finale as they took on No. 11 UC Santa Barbara (20-7, 3-2), but the Gauchos produced just enough offense to hold off the Beach.

Hertzka opened the game for the Beach as she struck at the 6:38 mark to give LBSU the lead in the opening quarter. The Gauchos wouldn't respond until later in the first quarter to tie the game up before the end of the first period.

The second period would shift in the Beach's favor as junior Marilia Mimidi saw daylight to give LBSU the lead, 2-1, at the 3:14 mark. The Beach would showcase an impressive defensive standing as they held the Gauchos scoreless in the period taking the lead into the half.

The match would continue to be a low scoring battle as UCSB scored the only goal in the third period to tied the game back up at 2-2. LBSU would take some chances throughout the quarter but came out empty handed.

Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara continued their standoff in the fourth quarter, but the Gauchos end up outscoring LBSU 3-1 in the final period. Hertzka put up the final goal for the Beach in the closing minutes.

Hertzka brought her goal total to 67 goals on the season and put herself one goal shy of tying Dayna Wawrynski and Ashley Richardson for second most all time in goals scored in single season in LBSU history. Mimidi's sole goal brought her up to 42 total goals on the season.

Long Beach State will be back in action next week for the Big West Tournament. The Big West Tournament will be held at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center. LBSU will await to see who they match up with in the first round of the tournament.
