Long Beach State Undefeated In Day One Of Aztec Invitational

No. 17 LBSU holds off No. 22 San Diego State and pummels St. Francis (PA).

San Diego, Calif. – Long Beach State opened the Aztec invitational against host No. 22 San Diego State and was able to hold the Aztecs off for a close 7-6 victory before closing out the day with a 17-4 win over St. Francis. Freshman Orsi Hertkza would lead the Beach with five total goals on the day, followed by four total goals from freshman Gabriella Matafora-Adams.

Senior Tori Morrissey gave the Beach the lead in the first quarter against SDSU, 1-0. Hertzka would score in the second quarter and leave the game tied at the half, 2-2.

LBSU would stay in front of the Aztecs at the end of three, 5-4, with goals from junior Paige Bennett, senior Annabel Harman, and Hertzka. Long Beach State would finish things off, 7-6, with the final goals from Matafora-Adams and freshman Sarah Barker.

The Beach would shift attention to their last game of the day against a familiar foe in St. Francis. LBSU would jump to an early 5-1 lead in the first quarter and not look back. The five goals would consist of a combination of Hertzka, Matafora-Adams, Morrissey, and two from junior Marilia Mimidi. LBSU would double their led at the half, 10-2. Bennett, Hertzka, Harman, and two from Matafora-Adams would all score.

LBSU would tack on two more in the third by Mimidi and Hertzka. By scoring, Mimidi and Hertzka would both tally hattricks on the day. The Beach would score five more goals in the fourth to finish the game, 17-4. Bennett, Harman, Matafora-Adams, redshirt freshman Aleah Watkins, and sophomore Katelyn Johnson would all score. Matafora-Adams would also finish the day with a hattrick.

Hertzka continued to score in every game for the Beach, now extending her scoring streak to 18 straight games. Hertzka now has 46 goals on the season leaving her 11 goals before reaching the Top 10 goals scored in a season in LBSU history. Mimidi also showed her impact with the Beach as the junior now has 23 goals on the season. Harman and Morrissey both have 20 goals for the Beach and sophomore Oliva Grim rounds off the top five scorers with 18 goals in 2019.  

LBSU will be back in action tomorrow against No. 14 UC San Diego at 10:30 a.m.
