Long Beach State Can’t Slow Down Gophers in 19-6 Defeat

3/17/2019 5:58:00 PM | Baseball

The Dirtbags were looking for their first series win of the year and pounded out 14 hits on Sunday afternoon, but LBSU couldn’t keep pace with visiting Minnesota in an 19-6 defeat on Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The visiting Minnesota Golden Gophers (5-12) were relentless offensively, taking a 19-6 victory over Long Beach State (3-15) on Sunday afternoon in Long Beach. Long Beach State matched its season high with 14 hits, but couldn't keep pace with the Gophers who scored 19 times on 21 hits.

Senior Laine Huffman led off and had singles in each of his three at-bats before he was lifted for a pinch hitter. Junior Jacob Hughey had three hits as well, and also drove in a pair of runs to increase his team lead. Hughey drove in five runs in the series and has 12 RBIs on the campaign. Riki DeSa doubled and scored after entering the game as a pinch-hitter and Santino Rivera chipped in a run and an RBI.

The Gophers were able to score in seven of the nine innings, putting up multiple runs in four separate frames to earn the victory. LBSU also committed a season-high six errors and used six pitchers in the ballgame. Minnesota also had 11 doubles and a home run to record 12 extra-base hits in the contest. It's the most runs allowed by the Dirtbags since a 22-12 loss to No. 7 Cal State Fullerton during the 1992 season.

Fifteen different position players cracked the lineup on Sunday with 10 of them recording at least one hit. The Dirtbags did score in each of the final four innings, but ultimately had too great a deficit to overcome. Out of the bullpen, John Sheaks and Nick Avila each had season-long outings as they continue to work back from injury.

LBSU goes on the road for its next contest, at USC on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. The Dirtbags will be at home next weekend for a non-conference rivalry series against Cal State Fullerton. First pitch for Friday's series opener is at 6 p.m. followed by a Friday Night Fireworks display.
