Softball Tripped Up At UNLV In 6-5 Loss

2/9/2019 6:30:00 PM | Softball

Long Beach State battled back from a 5-0 deficit but falls by one run.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Sydney McCollum's three-run home run in the third inning was the catalyst for a five-run comeback from Long Beach State, but an error in the bottom of the sixth inning let UNLV hold on for a 6-5 win in Long Beach State's fourth game of the Marucci Desert Classic.

UNLV (3-0) hosted LBSU in the only true road game of the tournament for Long Beach State (2-2), and the Rebels struck early as two defensive miscues on the evening for the Beach would really hurt the team.

The first got UNLV started in the first inning, as Kellie White picked up two outs but couldn't get out of the inning. With the bases loaded after the error and two walks, White would walk in two more runs before a Lauryn Barker groundout ended the inning.

Mia Trejo added to the lead in the bottom of the second inning with a three-run home run, setting UNLV in front 5-0.

Devyn Magnett took over in the circle, and pitched three scoreless innings as Long Beach State charged all the way back. Katelyn Hanson got the initial rally started with a one-out walk, and after a single from Naomi Hernandez, Sydney McCollum hit her first collegiate home run, a three-run shot to center field to cut the deficit to two runs.

The Beach threatened in the fifth, putting runners on second and third after a McCollum double, but UNLV got out of the inning with a strikeout of Taylor Rowland.

In the sixth, the middle of the lineup came through for the Beach. Alyssa Gonzales singled to start the inning, and Jenny Bressler loaded the bases with walk to Breezy Wise and hitting Justine Briones.

Hanson then delivered with a two-run single to center field, tying up the game at 5-5.

In the bottom half, a bookend defensive miscue let UNLV retake the lead for good. Lauren Tycksen beat out a single back to the catcher and then stole second base, putting a runner into scoring position for UNLV with two outs. An error from Hanson at shortstop kept the game going, however, as Tycksen came home to score, and the Beach couldn't even things up in the top of the seventh.

Long Beach State closes out the opening tournament of the season with one final game tomorrow, facing Utah Valley at 10:30 a.m. Follow the action via live stats through longbeachstate.com or unlvrebels.com.
