No. 25 Long Beach State scored 43 runs in the opening weekend, hitting .342.
Both teams combined for 32 hits and eight errors in a game that while untraditional was exciting throughout. Utah Valley (3-2) got the scoring started by putting up four runs in the first inning, as an error to start the game got UVU rolling. The Wolverines followed with five straight hits before a pitching change and Devyn Magnett were able to get the Beach out of the inning.
The tone of the game was set, and Long Beach State (3-2) bounced right back and took the lead in the bottom of the first and would never again trail. Naomi Hernandez kicked the rally off with a double as seven straight batters would reach base, six coming around to score as the Beach took a 6-4 lead. Big hits in that stretch came from Alyssa Gonzalez who hit a two-run double into the game as well as RBI singles from Breezy Wise and Justine Briones.
Adding another run in the second inning on another RBI single from Briones, both teams settled in for two innings before the roller coaster continued. A solo home run from Lyndsey Steverson gave Utah Valley a run in the top of the fifth, but a two-run double from Jamie Wren put the Beach on top 9-5 after the fifth.
In the sixth, Utah Valley would pull all the way back, taking advantage of a pair of Long Beach State errors to plate four runs and tie the game at 9-9.
Much like the first, Long Beach State rebounded with a big inning to seal the win. Wise got the Beach going with a solo home run, her second of the weekend to retake the lead with one swing. A hit batter and an error left two on for Katelyn Hanson who singled home two more, and the Beach would add four more runs before the end of the inning to take a 16-9 lead.

Utah Valley would scratch one more across against Kellie White in the top of the seventh, but the junior closed out the inning to pick up the win in relief.
Wren finished with five RBI, her second five-RBI game of the weekend, while Briones went 4-for-4, and Wise went 3-for-5 with the home run and three runs scored to lead the Beach.
Long Beach State will co-host the Stacy Winsberg Invitational with UCLA next weekend, hosting eight games in the LBSU Softball Complex, five of which will feature the Beach. The home opener for Long Beach State is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Friday, February 15 when the Beach will host Fresno State.
