Softball Drops A Pair In First Home Games

2/15/2019 6:24:00 PM | Softball

The Beach fell to Fresno State and Oregon State in their first home games of the season.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State battled back after falling into an early hole in both games Friday to open the Long Beach half of the Stacy Winsberg Invitational, but LBSU couldn't get over the top of either Fresno State or Oregon State in a pair of losses.

The Beach caught a tough break, losing the left side of their infield in two separate injuries during the first two innings Katelyn Hanson had to be removed following a collision, while Emily Salazar was forced to exit in the aftermath of her second-inning single.

Nonetheless, Long Beach State (3-4) cut into the early lead set by Fresno State (4-3) tying the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning. Drawing two walks to start the inning, Justine Briones picked up a third walk to load the bases, and while a groundout got the Bulldogs close to getting out of the inning, Tierra Falo, one of the replacements for the Beach, delivered with a two-run single to tie the game.

Ashley Coleman picked up two quick outs in the fifth, but the Bulldogs would mount a rally, loading the bases and then bringing home two runs in a single from Haley Fuller. Fresno State would ultimately exit the inning with a 6-2 lead, and the Beach could only make up one additional run in the remaining three innings.

The second game of the day followed close to the same script, as Oregon State (7-0) jumped out to an early lead and the Beach couldn't quite mount the complete comeback.

The Beavers scratched across a run in the first inning, and then added two more on an RBI single from Frankie Hammoude in the third inning. OSU then tacked on another run in the fourth inning to lead 4-0.

The Beach cut the lead in half in the fifth inning. Falo singled to start off the dinning, and Breezy Wise followed with a double to put two on for Briones, who singled through the middle to bring in both baserunners and cut the lead to 4-2. The Beavers were able to close out the inning, and limited the Beach to one additional hit the rest of the way.

Long Beach State continues the tournament on Saturday at the LBSU Softball Complex. Neutral games begin at 9 a.m., with the Beach scheduled to face Boise State at 2 p.m.
