Darkness Leads To Shortened Defeat For Softball Against Boise State

2/16/2019 6:20:00 PM | Softball

Long Beach State took an early lead, but ultimately fell 4-3 in six innings.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State got a big lift early, as three RBI doubles gave the Beach a three-run edge, but Boise State came all the way back to take a 4-3 lead before the game was called after six innings due to darkness at the LBSU Softball Complex.

Long Beach State (3-5) got a lift from the return of senior Nichole Fry to the lineup early, as the top of the lineup delivered in a big way to start the bottom of the first inning. After Fry was hit by a pitch, consecutive wild pitches moved the shortstop into scoring position, and Naomi Hernandez doubled to give the Beach a 1-0 lead.

Two more RBI doubles from Alyssa Gonzalez and Taylor Rowland followed as Long Beach State took a 3-0 lead over Boise State (5-2) after the first.

Junior Devyn Magnett cruised through two innings, and had allowed only a solo home run to Serenac Huchingson through three and two-thirds before the Broncos rallied. A two-out single from Jessica McKay was the first of four straight for Boise State, tying the game at 3-3.

Racing the rapidly approaching sunset, the game turned on a critical call at third base in the top of the fifth. On a base hit to right field, Kora Wade looked to extend for a triple.  The throw from Breezy Wise reached third base in plenty of time for Gonzalez to apply the tag, but Wade was deemed safe in what would be the turning point of the game.

Wade would come home on a wild pitch, the only run allowed by Kellie White who did not allow another hit in her 1.1 innings of relief. Samatha Fowler followed with a scoreless inning, but the damage was done as dusk forced the end of the game following six innings.

Long Beach State closes out the Stacy Winsberg Invitational with one final game Sunday, playing Oregon State for the second time this weekend. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m., with coverage at www.longbeachstate.com.
