Comeback Falls Short for Dirtbags in 3-2 Loss to Nevada

Long Beach State scored in each of the final two innings but was unable to come back against Nevada on Sunday afternoon, suffering a 3-2 loss on Bohl Diamond at Blair Field. Junior Victor Carlino had two hits in the game, including a ninth-inning solo home run.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Dirtbags (0-7) inched closer to victory on Sunday afternoon, but a late comeback came up short in a one-run loss to visiting Nevada (6-1). Long Beach State scored once in the eighth and once more in the ninth, and even had the potential tying run on base, but suffered a 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Wolf Pack.

Junior infielder Victor Carlino had two hits on Sunday, including a solo home run with two outs in the ninth inning to pace the Dirtbags offense. Chase Luttrell delivered an RBI groundout in the eighth inning to score Calvin Estrada, but that was the extent of the offensive output for the Dirtbags. Brooks Stotler did work a pair of walks in the leadoff spot and Jacob Hughey had a single and was also hit by a pitch to reach twice in the game.

Freshman Alfredo Ruiz got the start for Long Beach State and worked through traffic to allow one run on six hits in 3.1 innings pitched. Fellow freshman Basilio Pacheco worked 2.1 innings allowing a pair of runs on a hit and a walk allowed. Tyler Gums was strong in relief, tossing two scoreless frames with three strikeouts. Dylan Spacke worked a clean ninth inning with a punchout to keep the Dirtbags within striking distance.

The schedule doesn't get any easier for the Dirtbags, who are slated for another SEC series on the road. Long Beach State will take on No. 10 Ole Miss in Oxford, Miss. for a three-game set starting Friday at 4:30 p.m. PT.
