Long Beach State Stumbles at CSUN

The Beach were unable to overcome slow start in loss

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – A slow start hampered Long Beach State in a 60-45 loss at CSUN on Thursday night at the Matadome. The Beach got things going in the second half, but were unable to overcome the early deficit.
Long Beach State (7-18, 4-8 Big West) had two double-figure scorers in the setback as Shanaijah Davison led the team with 15 points, while Naomi Hunt added 10. Hunt and Cydnee Kinslow each contributed eight rebounds for the Beach.
CSUN (14-12, 8-4 Big West), meanwhile, received solid efforts from Channon Fluker (18 points, nine rebounds), Meghann Henderson (17 points), and Eliza Matthews (eight points, eight boards) as the Matadors shot 38.6-percent in the game.
The Beach were held scoreless for the first five minutes of action as the Matadors opened the game on an 8-0 run. CSUN's early lead would hold throughout the game as the Matadors never trailed.
LBSU had a tough second quarter as the Beach were limited to just 6.7-percent shooting (1-for-15) and held to five points in the frame. The offensive struggle led to Long Beach State trailing, 31-17, at the half.
Despite the Matadors opening the second have with six straight points to take a 20-point lead (37-17), the Beach would not go away. Long Beach State went on an 8-0 run to cut the Matadors' lead down to 12 (37-25) forcing a CSUN timeout. Following the break in action, the Matadors would push their lead back up to 16 (45-29) heading into the final quarter.
The Beach outscored the Matadors in the fourth quarter, 16-15, as Davison and Hunt combined for 12 points. Long Beach State connected on 6-of-18 field goals with two of those coming from beyond the arc, however, the damage had been done and LBSU was unable to overcome the early deficit as the Beach dropped their third straight contest.
Long Beach State will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 23 when the Beach hosts UC Santa Barbara at 4 p.m. inside the Walter Pyramid.
