Senior Joe Fryer was cooking up a 4-under round of 68 in Thursday’s opening round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in Lihue, Hawai’i. He will enter Friday’s second round just two shots back of the leaders at Wailua Golf Course.
LIHUE, Hawai'i – After 18 holes of action at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at Wailua Golf Course, senior Joe Fryer sits tied for fourth on the individual leaderboard following his 4-under 68 on Thursday. Fryer sits just two shots off the leaders, and near the top of a crowded field of 114 competitors.
This weekend's event is at the site of the 2019 Big West Championships, giving LBSU's five golfers a great preview for the conference championships in late April. LBSU sits 16th in a loaded field of 20 teams from across the nation, and the Beach is collectively just three shots out of 12th and four shots out of ninth with 36 holes left to play.
Fryer started his round on No. 8, and quickly got to work with birdies on 9, 10, and 12. He would go as low as -5 thanks to birdies on No. 15 and No. 1, and would make six birdies on the day. His only setback came when he posted a five on the par-3 third hole, but he is still within striking range of the top spot. Fryer's opening round placed him ahead of 13 nationally-ranked opponents, and his 68 is tied for his third-best round of the current season.
After Fryer, LBSU had equal scores of 75 from Tyler Schafer, Bryce Kvick and Hunter Reed, and Hunter Epson was close behind with a first-round 76.
Action resumes Friday at 10 a.m. PT with a shotgun start for round two. The final 18 holes will be played at the same time on Saturday at Wailua Golf Course.
