Schafer Goes 5-Under in Tuesday’s Second Round in Hawai’i

Freshman Tyler Schafer fired a 5-under round of 67 to move up 39 spots on the leaderboard on Tuesday at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at Wailua Golf Course. Long Beach State also moved up three spots as a team, into 13th place with eight nationally-ranked teams ahead of them.
LIHUE, Hawai'i – It was a productive day on the golf course for Long Beach State at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at Wailua Golf Course. The Beach moved up three spots on the team leaderboard to sit in 13th place going into Saturday's final round. Of the 12 teams ahead of LBSU on the leaderboard, eight of those squads are nationally ranked.
Freshman Tyler Schafer led the way for Long Beach State on Friday with a stellar 5-under round of 67, moving up 39 spots into a tie for 25th with 18 holes still to play. Schafer made six birdies and a bogey for his round, shooting 3-under on the front nine to post one of the day's best numbers. The 67 is a career-best round for Schafer, who improved on his previous best round of 69 at the Alister McKienzie Invitational back in October of 2018.
Ahead of Schafer, senior Joe Fryer continued his strong play to remain in a tie for fourth on the player leaderboard. He shot a 2-under round of 70 to move to -6 for the weekend. He is one of six players in a tie for fourth and sits just two shots off the leader. Fryer remains ahead of nine nationally-ranked golfers on the leaderboard.
Junior Hunter Epson was also under par on Friday, shooting a 1-under round of 71 in his second round, shaving five shots off his opening round total.
The final round gets underway on Saturday at 10 a.m. PT with a shotgun start. Live scoring will be available via GolfStat.com.
