Freshman Tyler Schafer followed up his stellar second round of 67 with an identical score in Saturday’s final round, going an impressive 10-under over the final 36 holes to finish in a tie for 4th place at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in Hawai’i.
LIHUE, Hawai'i – Long Beach State concluded the John A. Burns Intercollegiate with a strong final 18 holes, going 4-under as a team on Saturday to move into a Top 10 finish on the team leaderboard. The Beach finished in a tie for ninth, deadlocked with No. 24 ranked BYU. Of the eight teams that finished ahead of Long Beach State at Wailua Golf Club, eight of them are nationally ranked.
Freshman Tyler Schafer was the standout for Long Beach State among individuals, posting a 5-under score of 67 for the second consecutive round to finish in a tie for fourth in the event. After shooting a 75 in Thursday's first round, Schafer moved up 60 spots on the leaderboard over the final 36 holes to record the first Top 5 finish of his college career. Schafer finished ahead of 12 nationally-ranked players, including three who are ranked in the Top 10 in the country.
Schafer started his round on the 11th hole, and quickly got to work with three consecutive birdies on Nos. 12-14. After dropping a shot on 16, he bounced back with back-to-back birdies on 18 and 1 to get to -4 on the day. He would go on a run of pars before bogeying No. 7, but responded with another pair of birdies on holes 8 & 9. He ended up 7-under for the tournament in what is one of the more impressive performances of the season for Long Beach State.
Junior Hunter Epson, who was Schafer's high school teammate at Long Beach Wilson High School, also had a strong final round to go 1-2 with Schafer. Epson shot a 4-under round of 68 to surge into a tie for 35th on the leaderboard. Epson's only blemish came on the 15th hole when he recorded a double bogey. Outside of that misstep he registered six birdies on Saturday, going 4-under on the front nine to post a strong number.
Senior Joe Fryer cooled off on Saturday, but still ended up with a Top 40 finish, tied for 39th with an even-par result for the tournament.
Long Beach State returns to action Mar. 4-5 at the Sacramento State Invitational at Valley Hi Country Club in Elk Grove, Calif.
