LONG BEACH, Calif. –
The Black and Blue Rivalry came down to the wire as Long Beach State suffered a heartbreaking setback to UC Irvine on Thursday night at the Walter Pyramid as the Anteaters sunk the game-winning shot with just one second left to hand the Beach a 48-46 loss.

The Beach (7-16, 4-6 Big West) turned in another solid defensive effort, holding the Anteaters (16-5, 6-3 Big West) to just 48 points in the game. Coming into the contest, UC Irvine had been averaging 73.3 points per game, but the LBSU defense was strong and held the 'Eaters to under 50 points for the first time this season.

The conference foes played a close game throughout as the first quarter came to a close with the Beach down by just one (11-10). UC Irvine used an 8-0 run in the second frame to take a 23-18 lead at halftime in the defensively strong contest.

The Anteaters would hold the lead over the Beach until the fourth quarter, when Long Beach State drained a trio of threes from Justina King and Naomi Hunt to turn a five-point deficit (39-34) into a one-point advantage (40-39).

Hunt connected on back-to-back threes with 5:27 remaining in the game to give the Beach their first lead since 9:09 in the second quarter.

Following Long Beach State's success from long distance, UC Irvine countered and went on a 7-0 run to regain the lead (46-40). But the Beach would not go away. Long Beach State got a three from Shanaijah Davison and a jumper from Hunt to come within one (46-45) with just under two minutes left to play.

After a foul by UCI, Kianna Hamilton-Fisher went to the line and made the first of two free throws to even the score at 46-all with 15 seconds remaining in the game.

The two teams battled throughout the final 15 seconds and UC Irvine emerged victorious after Alexus Seaton collected a steal that led to a bucket by Jordan Sanders with just one second left in the game. Despite their efforts, the Beach were stationed under the UC Irvine basket and unable to get the ball down the court and a shot off before the clock expired, resulting in the two point loss.

Hunt finished the game with a season-high 21 points to go along with eight rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal, while Davison added 11 points, five assists, four steals, and two boards. Cyndee Kinslow led the Beach with nine rebounds, while adding three points and one steal.

Long Beach State travels to Honolulu, Hawai'i for a Saturday evening contest against the Rainbow Wahine on Feb. 16 at 7:30 p.m. (PT).
