Welch is entering her second full season on the staff for 2020.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Women's Water Polo Head Coach Gavin Arroyo has announced that Shana Welch has been promoted to Associate Head Coach for the program effective immediately.
Despite just one full year with the program, Welch has made a tremendous impact and will be taking on additional responsibilities during the upcoming season as Arroyo will be splitting time between the Beach and Team USA in advance of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
""We are pleased to announce the promotion of Shana Welch to Associate Head Coach," said Arroyo. "I feel that Shana has the tenacity, enthusiasm and most importantly, the knowledge to lead this program during my absence with the Men's Olympic team. She is organized and hard working and I look forward to seeing how this group does under her leadership."
Arroyo is in the midst of serving as an Assistant Coach for the United States Men's National Team for the current Olympic cycle through the Tokyo Olympics this summer, providing a need and an opportunity for Welch to take on more leadership with the women's water polo program this spring.
In her first season, Long Beach State's women's program finished No. 13 in the nation, and the young team was led by freshman Orsi Hertzka who scored 72 goals, followed by Marilla Mimidi, with 45. Mimidi is pursuing her Olympic dreams on a redshirt season, competing with the Canadian Women's National Team in their qualification campaign.
