Long Beach State combined for 16 assists while scoring a season-high in the victory.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State had a welcome return to the Walter Pyramid, pulling away from Fresno Pacific in the second half for a 93-62 victory over the Sunbirds Friday night.
Long Beach State (2-3) set season highs in points scored, rebounds, assists and field goal percentage in a comprehensive performance against Division II Fresno Pacific (0-5). Chance Hunter scored 19 second-half points to finish with 21, while fellow sophomore Michael Carter III finished with 16 points and six assists on the evening. Junior Drew Cobb also finished in double figures, scoring 12 points while leading the team with eight rebounds.
The Beach finished with 16 assists on the evening, led by Carter III while Colin Slated added five. The early going wasn't entirely as smooth as the final result indicated though, as the Sunbirds held tough early against the Beach, taking an 8-4 lead as Aamondae Coleman hit a pair of early threes.
The Sunbirds lead would hold a little while longer, going up 15-12 on a Jonathan Brown fast break. A technical foul assessed on Brown would help stymie the momentum, and Long Beach State answered with a 7-0 run capped by a Cobb jumper, and would never trail again.
Tied at 19-19, Carter III went to work, scoring eight straight points for the Beach after a Joshua Morgan basket assisted by the sophomore as the Beach took a 29-19 lead. That advantage would hold until halftime at 39-29.
In the second half, Hunter took his turn leading the offense as the Beach broke the game open. Hitting a trio of 3-pointers in the second half and going 8-of-9 from the field in the second half, Hunter led the way to a 54-point period for LBSU that carried the Beach to a 31-point victory.
Long Beach State was efficient from the field and effective from the line, scoring 25 points on free throws and shooting 55.4 percent for the game.
All 12 active players for the Beach scored in the game, including redshirt Jeffrey Yan who scored his first collegiate basket in the dying minutes.
Long Beach State returns to the road this weekend and will face No. 14 Arizona in a non-bracketed game of the Wooden Legacy. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. PT and the game will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks.
