LOS ANGELES, Calif.—Senior Austin Stewart's fifth goal of the game proved to the game-winner in a high-scoring overtime thriller at Loyola Marymount as Long Beach State prevailed 21-20 in overtime.
Long Beach State (15-12) started the game strong with four goals to their two goals before the Lions fought back offensively outscoring the Beach 10-7 heading into the second half. A big third quarter for Long Beach tied the game up entering the fourth quarter and four goals for each team in the fourth quarter sent the game to overtime.
Loyola Marymount (13-11) came out eager to score in the first overtime with a goal in the first twenty seconds. Heading into the second overtime the Lions were up 19-18 before freshman Rafael Real Vergara scored on a penalty shot at 0:25 to tie the game up 19-19.
Goals from Theodoros Pateros and Stewart sent them to victory in the second overtime, ending the game 21-20.
Scoring efforts by seven of the players helped the Beach defeat the Lions Wednesday afternoon. Freshman Rafael Real Vergara and Senior Austin Stewart led the Beach with five goals each, followed by Pateros who scored four.
The Beach will be back in action on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. when they will take on UC Irvine in their last regular season game. Live stats will be available on https://www.thefosh.net/.
