No. 8 Long Beach State Defeats No. 14 UC Irvine in Regular Season Finale

Strong start pushes Long Beach State to victory in the Black and Blue Rivalry.
IRVINE, Calif.—No. 8 Long Beach State (16-12, 2-3 GCC) defeated No. 14 UC Irvine (7-14, 0-5 GCC) Saturday afternoon, 11-8 at the Anteater Aquatics Center.
Long Beach State (16-12, 2-3 Golden Coast) got off to a quick start and never looked back on the road in Irvine. Senior Austin Stewart opened the scoring to get the Beach going. UC Irvine (7-14, 0-5 Golden Coast) scored to pull within one at 2-1, but the Beach scored three more goals in the first quarter and held UCI off of the board in the second quarter to take a 6-2 lead into halftime.
A penalty shot scored by Nemanja Bakic helped hold off a UC Irvine rally in the third quarter to keep the score 8-5, and the junior would repeat the feat in the fourth quarter, once again scoring on a penalty to keep the lead at three goals.
Two goals by freshman Rafael Real Vegara down the stretch helped seal the victory for the Beach. Veraga and sophomore Matt Morris shared the team lead with three goals apiece. Eduardo Wainberg, Theodoros Pateros and Stewart all had one goal in the win.
With the win, Long Beach State secured the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Golden Coast Conference Tournament. The Beach will face the No. 5 seed San Jose State in the opening round on Friday, November 22 at 1 p.m. at Pepperdine.
