The Beach threatened in the second half on the road, but a Matadors goal in the 17th minute was enough for CSUN in a crucial Big West matchup on Halloween night in Northridge.
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – On a cold, blustery Thursday night, CSUN (11-5-3, 5-2-0 Big West) came out with a 1-0 victory over Long Beach State (4-12-0, 2-5 Big West) in a crucial conference matchup to start the season's final week of action. The Matadors broke through for the game's only goal in the 17th minute, and CSUN was able to hold on for the win on its home field.
Â
Long Beach State generated some quality chances in the first 15 minutes, led by sophomore Sierra Castles who had a pair of shots on target. Nadiyah Siqueiros joined her with two shots on goal in the second half, and Kaylee Ramirez led the Beach with three total shots for the game.
Â
CSUN's goal came from a free kick, as a ball into the box fell to Bethany Fitzsimmons who was able to fire it home above the hands of Ashley Seymour in goal. Seymour ended up with three saves on the night while playing the full 90 minutes. Senior Katie Pingel played 35 minutes off the bench for Long Beach State, appearing in her first match since Oct. 10 against Cal State Fullerton.
Â
The Beach had a 6-4 advantage in shots after halftime, and carried more of a threat with the wind at their backs, but the equalizer never quite materialized. The loss eliminates LBSU from Big West Tournament consideration with just one match remaining on the schedule.
Â
Long Beach State will conclude its season on Sunday at George Allen Field against Hawai'i at 2 p.m. The match will be broadcast by ESPN3, and LBSU will honor its two departing seniors, Pingel and Taylor Bistline, in a pregame ceremony.
