BEFORE KICKOFF
• Long Beach State split its two matches last week, picking up a comfortable 2-0 win over UC Riverside on Thursday before suffering a road loss at Black & Blue rivals UC Irvine on Sunday, 2-1. LBSU scored first against the Anteaters but allowed a pair of second-half goals to come up short.
• The Beach took care of UC Riverside with a pair of first-half goals last Thursday, giving LBSU its largest halftime lead of the season. Nadiyah Siqueiros opened the scoring with her first goal of the season, finishing off a perfect cross from Kaylee Ramirez to put the Beach on top in the 21st minute.
• Less than two minutes later, Sierra Castles registered her first goal of the season to double the Long Beach lead. She took a pass from Angela Morales onto her left foot and buried a shot into the top corner of the far side of the goal.
• Morales picked up an assist on both goals and was instrumental in LBSU's attack against the Highlanders. She also had a terrific spinning nutmeg along the sidelines which has since gone viral on social media, collecting millions of views in just a few days.
• In goal, Ashley Seymour recorded her second career shutout and first of the season, collecting four saves against the Highlanders to earn the clean sheet victory.
• LBSU took the lead on the road at UC Irvine on Sunday evening thanks to redshirt junior Kaitlin Fregulia. She converted a modified bicycle kick for a goal in the 40th minute, finishing off a header from Taylor Bistline who flicked on a Kaylee Ramirez free kick. The Beach took that 1-0 lead into the locker room, but the Anteaters scored twice after the break to snag the win.
• Both matches this week are must-win games for the Beach in order to finish in the top four of the standings and be eligible for the Big West Conference Tournament.
SENIOR CELEBRATION
• On Sunday afternoon, Long Beach State will honor its two departing seniors, Taylor Bistline and Katie Pingel. The duo has combined to play in 119 games for the Beach, claiming three All-Big West honors between them.
• Bistline has played in at least 16 matches in all four years at the Beach, scoring three goals and dishing out three assists. The defensive midfielder was a stalwart last season for LBSU, earning honorable mention All-Big West recognition.
• Pingel came to the Beach as a transfer from Santa Clara. She started 28 games in her first two seasons on campus, collecting seven goals, five assists and 19 points in that span while earning consecutive second team All-Big West honors. She has suffered through injuries this season, but has scored once and remains tied for the team lead with three assists in 11 games played.
SCOUTING THE MATADORS
• CSUN had their four-match Big West winning streak snapped on Sunday, losing 2-1 at UC Davis. The Matadors remain firmly in the postseason picture, but could certainly use a result on Thursday to help secure their spor, especially with unbeaten Cal State Fullerton waiting in the season finale.
• The Matadors are second in the conference with 10 wins, with a 5-2-2 record at home this season. CSUN has amassed nine clean sheets this season, including three in a row before their most recent defeat against UC Davis.
• The leading goal scorers for CSUN are Bethany Fitzsimmons and Alexis White, who each have a handful of goals for the Matadors. CSUN has 11 different goal scorers this season and has outscored its opponents 22-14.
SERIES RECORD vs. CSUN
• LBSU holds a 14-9-3 edge in the all-time series with the Matadors, and the Beach are unbeaten in their last seven meetings with CSUN. The last victory for the Matadors in the series came back in 2013, a 1-0 victory in Northridge. LBSU won last season's meeting in Long Beach, 3-1.
SCOUTING THE RAINBOW WAHINE
• Hawai'i opened Big West play with three consecutive victories, but the Rainbow Wahine have gone winless over their last three conference matches, with draws against Cal State Fullerton and Cal Poly, followed by a 4-1 home loss against UC Santa Barbara their last time out. UH is squarely in the postseason picture entering with a key match at UC Davis on Thursday prior to its visit to Long Beach. The Rainbow Wahine are in contention to win the regular season title but also at risk of not making the conference tournament based on the results of the final week.
• The Hawai'i attack has been much improved since the start of conference play. The Rainbow Wahine scored just five goals in non-conference play, but have scored 10 goals so far in Big West action, scoring at least once in every contest.
• Kayla Ryan has five goals to lead the scoring for Hawai'i, with Kelci Sumida adding four goals and an assist. Goalkeeper Alexis Mata has played every minute in goal this season for UH, collecting five shutouts with a 1.32 GAA on the year.
SERIES RECORD vs. HAWAI'I
• Long Beach State has dominated the all-time series with Hawai'i, owning an 8-2-3 advantage.
PARIS TRIP
• Prior to the season, the Long Beach State women's soccer team went on a foreign tour to France for the 2019 Women's World Cup. The Beach played a pair of exhibition matches against the Argentina National Team during an 11-day trip to Paris and surrounding cities. LBSU then witnessed the Argentines earn their first Women's World Cup point during a 0-0 draw with Japan at the Parc de Princes. The Beach capped off the trip in Reims, France where the team witnessed Team USA's historic 13-0 victory over Thailand in their World Cup opener.
