Long Beach falls in conference game to Gauchos 11-10 on Saturday night.
LONG BEACH, Calif.— No. 7 Long Beach State fought to the end but couldn't get the upset over conference rival UC Santa Barbara Saturday night. A late push came up just short for the Beach in an 11-10 loss at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center.
Long Beach State (12-9) took an early lead outscoring the Gauchos 3-2 in the first quarter. Early efforts by Theodoros Pateros, Rafael Real Vergara, Matt Morris and Garrett Zaan put Long Beach ahead entering the second half with a score of 6-5. UC Santa Barbara came back in the third quarter scoring three goals to one goal for the Beach, putting them ahead entering the fourth quarter. Back-and-forth scoring efforts by both teams created chaos but Long Beach couldn't pull away with the upset win.
Freshman Rafael Real Vergara continued his impressive freshman campaign with four goals and a steal. Nemanja Bakic and Zaan scored two goals and Pateros and Morris each had one goal in the hard fought battle to UC Santa Barbara.
The Beach will return on October 30th to take on UC San Diego at 6 p.m. and on November 1st to battle No. 3 Pacific at 7 p.m.
