Late Goals From Vergara, Pateros Lead Long Beach State Past No. 9 UC San Diego

Long Beach takes down the Tritons 12-10 on Wednesday night.
LONG BEACH, Calif.—No. 6 Long Beach State went back and forth in a high-scoring match with No. 9 UC San Diego but the Beach came out on top with a score of 12-10 at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center.
Tied 10-10 in the closing minutes, freshman Rafael Real Vergara finished off his hat trick with a screamer with 2:52 left to put the Beach back in front. Theordoros Pateros then slammed the door shut with a backhand goal in the final minute as Long Beach State (13-9) defeated UC San Diego (18-6).
Seven players scored for the Beach to fuel the win, led by three goals from Vergara. Curtis Casper, Garrett Zaan and Matt Morris all had two goals each and Quinten Osborne, Nemanja Bakic and Pateros each contributed one goal each for the win.
The Beach came out quick with goals from Bakic, Vergara and Zaan to finish quarter one with a score of 3-2. The Beach and the Tritons both scored three goals to make it 6-5 going into halftime. The third quarter was full of back and forth goals including four goals from the Gauchos to even up the score at 9-9 going into the fourth quarter.
The Beach will be back in action on Friday when they take on No. 3 Pacific in a Golden Coast Conference matchup at 7 p.m.
