Â
BEFORE KICKOFF
• The Beach went back-and-forth with UC Davis last Friday on ESPN3, but the Aggies were able to pull out a 2-1 victory at George Allen Field.
Â
• Long Beach State outshot the Aggies 18-6 in the match, including an overwhelming 14-2 advantage in the second half, but couldn't convert enough of those chances into goals.
Â
• UC Davis took the lead in the 31st minute as a cross into the box was slapped away from goal by Marta Alemany Sanchez in goal. Unfortunately, the ball fell right at the feet of an Aggie player waiting in the penalty area to put home the opening goal.
Â
• The Beach responded to tie the game in the 49th minute on a nice give-and-go goal between their two starting forwards. After Kaylee Ramirez sent a free kick towards the top of the box, Elysia Laramie flicked a header to Sierra Castles who was able to control it and flick a pass through two defenders to set her classmate up for a one-time finish on the equalizer.
Â
• Despite dominating possession, the Beach surrendered the eventual game-winning goal in the 67th minute off a UC Davis corner kick. The header off the corner went off Alemany Sanchez's fingertips, then off the post, then into goal to give the Aggies the 2-1 win.
Â
• LBSU nearly force overtime in the 89th minute as Ayana Robles sent a shot off the crossbar that came back into play. Laramie was able to get her head to it, but her header sailed just inches above the goal and out of play.
Â
ACE IN THE GOAL
• Sophomore forward/defender Elysia Laramie has been on fire since the start of Big West play, scoring all four of LBSU's goals over four conference games. Laramie started her rampant scoring run with a pair of goals at Cal Poly in a 2-1 comeback win on Oct. 3. Her goals were scored just over 30 seconds apart, starting in the 84th minute, to give LBSU the road victory.
Â
• The brace at Cal Poly was the first multi-goal game of her career and the first for LBSU since Dana Fujikuni scored a pair on Sept. 7 of last year, part of a 6-0 win over St. John's. Laramie also set her career high with seven shots in the win, which she matched against UC Davis on Oct. 18.
Â
• Laramie scored the only goals for the Beach in matches against Cal State Fullerton and UC Davis, giving her five goals on the season and four in conference action. No other player in the Big West has more goals in conference play than Laramie, who is one of three players with four Big West goals so far.
Â
SCOUTING THE HIGHLANDERS
• UC Riverside snapped a five-game losing streak and eight-game winless run with a 2-0 win over UC Davis on Sunday in Riverside. The Highlanders have struggled on the road this season, going 0-7-0 while being outscored 16-1 in those matches. UCR just finished a four-game homestand and will end the year with three consecutive contests away from home.
Â
• Alexis Vera is the leading scorer for the Highlanders, netting four goals plus one assist. She scored both goals for UCR in Sunday's 2-0 win over UC Davis.
Â
SERIES RECORD vs. UC RIVERSIDE
• LBSU has a 9-6-5 all-time record against the Highlanders. UCR earned a 1-0 victory in last season's meeting in Riverside and the Beach won the last meeting between the teams at George Allen Field, 3-0, in 2017.
Â
SCOUTING THE ANTEATERS
• UC Irvine played a brutally difficult non-conference schedule, going just 1-9-0 before the start of Big West play. Included in those 10 games were three games against Top 10 teams (at Virginia, vs. Vanderbilt, at BYU), three games against teams receiving votes in national polls (Cal, Texas Tech, UCF) and away games against Arizona State and Arizona.
Â
• The 'Eaters started Big West play with a pair of wins over UC Riverside and UC Davis, before losing 3-0 at Hawai'i and battling to a 0-0 draw with Cal State Fullerton last Friday. Before hosting the Beach, UCI will have a tough road test against CSUN on Thursday.
Â
• The leading scorer for the Anteaters is Scarlett Camberos, who has three goals and a pair of assists this year on a team-high 24 shots. UC Irvine has been shut out eight times this season and has yet to score more than two goals in a match this season.
Â
SERIES RECORD vs. UC IRVINE
• The Beach has a 10-12-6 all-time record against the Anteaters, winning last season's meeting in Long Beach, 2-1. LBSU earned a 0-0 draw on its last visit to Anteater Stadium and will be seeking its first win in Irvine since the 2013 season.
Â
PARIS TRIP
• Prior to the season, the Long Beach State women's soccer team went on a foreign tour to France for the 2019 Women's World Cup. The Beach played a pair of exhibition matches against the Argentina National Team during an 11-day trip to Paris and surrounding cities. LBSU then witnessed the Argentines earn their first Women's World Cup point during a 0-0 draw with Japan at the Parc de Princes. The Beach capped off the trip in Reims, France where the team witnessed Team USA's historic 13-0 victory over Thailand in their World Cup opener.
