Long Beach State men’s golf completed the first round of the Husky Invitational on Tuesday but, due to a delayed start, play was suspended midway through round two with LBSU tied for fifth.
SAMMAMISH, Wash. -- Long Beach State opened play at the Husky Invitational on Tuesday at the Aldarra Golf Club, completing the opening round and making it midway through round two before play was called. The tournament had a two-hour fog delay in the morning, pushing the start time back and causing the eventual suspension of the second round. Play will resume with a shotgun start on Wednesday at 8 a.m.
When play was stopped, four of LBSU's golfers had played 12 holes of round two, while two others were through nine. LBSU is currently in a tie for fifth place, one shot back of Washington State in fourth.
The top performer for the Beach was senior Patrick Pockels, who ended the day at 1-over to sit in a tie for fifth place on the individual leaderboard. Pockels birdied his first hole of the day at 11, then after one bogey on the back nine and two on the front side, he was able to birdie his final hole of the opening round to finish at 1-over. Pockels was even in round two and will have six holes to play once action resumes.
Senior Joe Fryer was also even through his second round, and finished at 4-over on the day. That's good for a tie for 13th on the leaderboard. Junior Hunter Epson was 3-over through 12 holes of round two and sits 8-over for the tournament.
Scoring was difficult on Tuesday, especially in the opening round. Only one golfer in the field of 76 was able to shoot under par in the first round, and the host Huskies had the best team score of 11-over after the first 18 holes.
Round two continues Wednesday at 8 a.m. PT, followed immediately by the third and final round of the tournament.
