Senior Joe Fryer was Long Beach’s top finisher in a tie for 12th, while junior Hunter Epson had the team’s best final round with a 1-under 70 on Wednesday.
SAMMAMISH, Wash. -- The Beach played the final round-and-a-half of the Husky Invitational on Wednesday at Aldarra Golf Club, finishing the event in eighth place. Long Beach State had three golfers finish within the Top 15 as Joe Fryer was tied for 12th and both Patrick Pockels and Hunter Epson tied for 15th.
Fryer was steady on the week, finishing his second round at 2-over 73 before firing another 73 in his final round. Conditions were tough on the week as just one player (Robert Moran from the host Washington Huskies) finished below par, ending the week at 1-under.
Epson's final round was LBSU's best of the tournament by two strokes as he fired a 1-under 70 to end his week. The junior bogeyed the 11th to start his round, but immediately answered with an eagle on 12 to get things back on track. Pockels got off to a solid start to the tournament and was able to finish in the Top 15 after his third round 76. Freshman Tyler Schafer had his best showing in round three, shooting a 75 to crack the Top 50 on the leaderboard.
The Beach will return to action in about two weeks at the Alister Mackenzie Invitational in Fairfax, Calif. The event is hosted by Cal and will begin on Monday, Oct. 8 with the first two rounds of play.
