LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Prior to the start of their Long Beach State careers, incoming freshmen Theodoros Pateros and Garrett Zaan recently competed at the 2018 FINA World Youth Water Polo Championships in Szombathely, Hungary. Pateros played for Greece, helping them to an unbeaten run in the competition that ended with a 9-8 victory over Spain in the final. Zaan, meanwhile, was a member of Team USA, helping the Americans to a ninth-place finish, defeating Russia 14-8 in the ninth-place game.
During the tournament, Pateros had a solid performance against Argentina. He had three shots, a goal, an assist, a field block, and drew a pair of exclusions in Greece's 13-3 victory. The gold medal represented the first ever medal for the Greek men's team at the competition.
Zaan was an active contributor for Team USA, netting seven goals for the tournament. He scored in four of Team USA's seven games, scoring a hat trick in the team's 26-7 drubbing of Uzbekistan on Aug. 14.
This was the fourth Youth Water Polo World Championship, after its original launch in 2012 by FINA. The tournament is held every two years with 20 qualifying countries competing, and all athletes must be under the age of 18 to participate.
Long Beach State men's water polo opens its 2018 season this weekend in San Diego for the Triton Invitational, hosted by UC San Diego. The first match will be Saturday at 9:20 a.m. against Cal Baptist.
