Water Polo Defeats No. 18 San Jose State In Overtime

Newport Beach, Calif. - Playing in its last game in the Barbara Kalbus Invitational, No. 19 Long Beach State mounted a second-half comeback to defeat No. 18 San Jose State 9-7 in overtime.

In the first quarter, Alexandra Massier got LBSU (3-8) on the board when she scored on a 6-on-5 opportunity and the game was tied at 1 heading into the second period.

SJSU (3-9) scored twice in the second quarter to take a 3-1 lead at halftime.

LBSU went on the offensive in the third quarter scoring four goals, two from Massier on counter attacks and two from Maria Eleni Mimidi on a perimeter shot and 6-on-5 opportunity.

SJSU also scored four goals in the third period to keep take a 7-5 period heading into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, LBSU locked down defensively to hold SJSU and Annabel Harman and Virginia Smith each scored to force the game into overtime with the game tied at 7.

In the first overtime period, LBSU took an 8-7 after Tori Morrissey scored on a 6-on-5 opportunity. The Beach then iced the game when Massier scored her fourth goal to give LBSU the 9-7 victory.

Overall, the Beach went 2-2 during the Barbara Kalbus Invitational and defeated SJSU in the 13th-place game.
