Long Beach, Calif. - The Long Beach State beach volleyball program will start its 2018 campaign with a new event, hosting the program's alumni for an exhibition at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the LBSU Sand Courts.
Long Beach State beach volleyball was one of the teams that began NCAA competition in the first season of the sport, 2012, and has been one of the top programs in the country since, reaching the national championships three times, most recently last season.
No. 7 LBSU will have plenty of talent to draw from to face their own alumni, which will feature recent graduates as well as players from the 2013 AVCA National Championship team.
Leading the way for the current squad will be returning first-team All-Americans Nele Barber and Rachel Nieto, as most of the top of the lineup from last year's squad that reached Gulf Shores last year returns for the Beach.
The regular season for beach volleyball begins on March 3, when LBSU will face a pair of Big West opponents on the road in Northridge. First up, No. 7 Long Beach State will play CSU Bakersfield at 1 p.m. before taking on the hosts, CSUN, at 3 p.m.
