Long Beach State split two matches from UCLA on Saturday.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Already leading Long Beach State in career wins, Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah continue to set the standard for Beach Volleyball, recording their 100th win as the Beach defeated Pepperdine to close the Battle For LA after a loss to No. 2 UCLA.
No. 2 UCLA (6-2) hosted the two matches for Long Beach State (4-2), and the Beach pushed the Bruins in the early wave. Despite being a straight set win for UCLA, Tineke Hinton and Demi Wagdy sent both sets with Alex Fernandez and Cassie Dodd past 21 in a 26-24, 24-22 loss in the second flight, and Kiara Edwards and Savannah Standage pushed Ava Williamson and Jesse Dueck into three, falling 21-13, 19-21, 15-13.
UCLA picked up wins in all three matches of the second wave to hold off the Beach at home, however, ultimately winning 5-0.
Long Beach State quickly bounced back against Pepperdine (2-5) in the second meeting this season between the Beach and the Waves. Hinton and Wagdy cruised to a 21-18, 21-13 win over Maddy Snow and Gabriella Perez, and Edwards/Standage also won in straight sets 21-15, 21-16 to give the Beach a quick 2-0 lead after the first wave of matches.
Sitting at 99 wins, Gementera and Hagenah closed out the win with their victory in the first flight, winning 21-15, 21-18 over Emma Eden and Michaela Cyrani for their 100th career victory, having played together throughout their time at LBSU.
Brooke Wolley joined Mahala Esser in the fifth flight in a 21-16, 21-10 win, though the Waves rallied to steal a point at the threes as Alie Jagielska and Sonia Mancuso won in three sets 15-21, 21-18, 15-11.
Long Beach State will play in Long Beach next weekend, hosting their home tournament at LBCC over March 6 and 7.
