Nevada Pulls Away Late In 76-67 Win Over The Beach

Long Beach State battled back for a fourth-quarter tie but came up just short.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Shanaijah Davison's steal and breakaway layup with 7:15 remaining tied the game at 56-56, part of the sophomore's game-high 15 points, but Nevada would hold off the challenge and defeat Long Beach State 76-67.

Long Beach State (0-4) was led by Davison, who finished with 15 points and five rebounds, one of three to score in double-figures for the Beach.

Nevada (1-2) got off to a quick start, going on a 7-2 run to open the game, taking advantage of two quick fouls on Naomi Hunt to help open up a size advantage on the Beach. Long Beach State continued to stay aggressive however, working inside to help offset a poor shooting night from three.

The Wolf Pack extended their lead to 10 points at 22-12, but Long Beach State bounced back, cutting the lead to three at 25-22 on a Sydney Bordonaro three, and tying the game at 28-28 on a layup from Aaryon Green, ultimately heading into the half down three, 33-30.

Nevada opened the second half on a 12-1 run to increase their advantage once again, and held a five-point lead entering the final quarter. Dialing up the pressure, Long Beach State put together a 7-0 run capped by Davison's breakaway layup, but Nevada once more had the answer, getting a jumper from Jade Redmon on the next possession to hold off the final charge from the Beach.

Long Beach State held Nevada to just 20 field goals on 36.4 percent shooting, but undefended shooting was the difference, as the Wolf Pack made 30 free throws to Long Beach State's 18, with the Beach shooting just 48.6 percent from the line on the night.

In addition to Davison, Bordonaro finished with 14 points while making all three of Long Beach State's 3-pointers off of the bench, and freshman Justina King added 11 with three assists and three steals.

Long Beach State remains at home this week, and will host the Beach Classic once again starting on Friday, November 23. Boise State, Idaho and Northern Iowa will join the field, with the Beach hosting NIU in their first game at 7 p.m. on Friday, following the neutral game between Boise State and Idaho.
