
Men’s Golf Sits Top Five After First Round in Stockton

The Beach is tied for fifth place after the first 18 holes of the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational, with three golfers shooting under par on Thursday.
STOCKTON, Calif. -- Long Beach State opened the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational on Thursday, shooting 3-under as a team to sit in a tie for fifth with 36 holes to play. Three Beach golfers shot under par in the opening round, led by senior Joe Fryer and junior Hunter Reed, who each posted a 2-under 69 to sit in a tie for 15th on the leaderboard.
Fryer sat 5-under after 12 holes thanks to a run of three straight birdies after the turn. After a birdie on the eighth, he moved to the back nine at 2-under and immediately picked up shots at Nos. 10-12. Fryer had solid success on par 3's on Thursday, picking up a birdie in three of his four chances on the course. His stroke average of 2.50 on the par 3's was tied for the best of the round.
Reed had an active round with eight pars, six birdies and four bogeys to post his 69. He was able to finish strong, picking up a shot on No. 15, 17, and 18. Senior Patrick Pockels was also in the red, shooting a 1-under 70 to open the weekend. Pockels started the day with a birdie on the first hole, and then birdied 16 and 17 to get back below par before concluding his round. Junior Hunter Epson rounded out the scorers for the Beach with an opening-round 73.
As a team, LBSU is in a tie with Nevada and Sacramento State for fifth place with a combined 280 through 18 holes, 10 shots off the lead. They're positioned just one shot back of St. Mary's in fourth, three shots back of San Francisco in third and six shots back of BYU in second place. Big West rivals UC Santa Barbara are just a shot back of the Beach in eighth.
Play resumes with round two on Friday morning, beginning with tee times at 8 a.m. at Stockton Country Club.
