Beach Tennis Hosting Annual Fall Tournament This Weekend

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Beach Tennis makes its home debut in the 2017-18 campaign this weekend as Rhodes Tennis Center will be the host site for the 2017 Beach Tennis Fall Tournament. Four freshmen are set to make their competitive debuts on LBSU's home courts, with teams from around the country visiting for the weekend tournament.
Long Beach State will have six players in action this weekend, playing in four singles flights and two doubles flights. There will be competitors from Grand Canyon, LMU, Montana, Portland State, Washington State, and Big West schools Cal State Fullerton, CSUN, UC Irvine and UC Riverside. The tournament breaks down with two rounds of doubles on Friday with one round of singles play mixed in, then two singles rounds Saturday with one round of doubles, and finally a single round of both singles and doubles to decide the tournament winners in each flight on Sunday.
Representing Long Beach State in Flight A will be senior Lena Pacholski and sophomore Natalia Munoz. Those two represent the only returning players for LBSU competing this weekend. They will play at 11 a.m. on Friday against UCR's Karla Dulay and PSU's Brianna Thompson, respectively.
In Flight B, Lalita Devarakonda will face Grand Canyon's Celina Buhr on Friday at 12:30 p.m. while classmate Sadaf Sadeghvaziri plays UCI's Ashlynn Hall at the same time. Freshman Georgia Gulin is LBSU's lone representative in Flight C, and she will play UCR's Tamilla Vaksman in her opener at 12:30. Finally, in Flight D, freshman Carlota Casasampere will make her Long Beach State debut against Gillian Parker of UC Irvine at 2 p.m. on Friday.
Each day of competition will start with doubles play, starting at 10 a.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. In the top doubles flight, Long Beach State's team of Munoz and Pacholski will play their opening match against Tammy Van and Tracy Van of UC Riverside. In Flight B, Devarakonda and Sadeghvaziri face off against Arpe Bagumyan and Emma Roenholt from CSUN and Gulin and Casasampere will receive a bye into the quarterfinals.
Fans should be advised that with the Long Beach Marathon running on Sunday morning, access to Rhodes Tennis Center will be impacted.
