LONG BEACH, Calif. - The 2017 dual match season gets underway on Friday at 1 p.m. as Long Beach State women's tennis will make the trip to Los Angeles to take on Loyola Marymount. The 49ers just completed a rain-shortened Beach Tennis Winter Invitational last weekend, but the weather forecast is clear for the regular-season opener against the Lions.
ACROSS THE NET
LMU enters Friday's match with a 1-1 record. The Lions began their season with a 5-2 loss last Saturday vs. UCLA, then bounced back with a 5-2 win over CSUN on Thursday afternoon.
There are six Big West schools on LMU's schedule, including a stretch of five straight matches from Jan. 26-Feb. 19. The only conference schools the Lions will not face this season are Cal Poly, Hawai'i, and UC Davis.
The Beach took care of business in last year's meeting with LMU, winning 6-1 in Long Beach. The 49ers were 2-1 in doubles and won five singles matches in straight sets for the comfortable win. Long Beach State owns a 26-20 all-time advantage against LMU.
SENIORS SPECIAL
The 2017 senior class will go down as one of the best in Long Beach State history, and is already the winningest. All four of this year's seniors-- Laura Eales, Julie Gerard, Maeva Razakasoa and Hayley Thompson --are in the Top 15 for overall wins in program history, still with a final semester yet to play.
Senior Maeva Razakasoa is a two-time and defending Big West Player of the Year. She is looking to claim the conference's top honor for the third time this season, which would put her one award shy of LBSU Hall of Famer Hannah Grady.
ON A STREAK
LBSU has won 10 straight regular season matches dating back to Mar. 17 of last season.
Against Big West competition, Long Beach State has won 28 consecutive regular season matches since Mar. 30, 2013.
