Mandel, Ramirez Place Second At Pepperdine Invitational

MALIBU, Calif. - Seniors Pauline Mandel and Kevin Ramirez posted second-place finishes as Long Beach State kicked off the 2016 cross country season at the Pepperdine Invitational on Thursday afternoon at Alumni Park.
Scored as duel meets, the men's team fell to the host Waves, 25-30 and to UC Irvine, 20-43. On the women's side, LBSU defeated Cal State Bakersfield, 22-34 and beat the Waves 26-31, while falling to the Anteaters, 20-43 and to USC, 19-37.
Mandel covered the 4,000-meter women's race in a time of 15:22.68, just eight seconds behind race winner Madison Ricks of USC. Freshman Christie Nesbit crossed the finish line in 16th (16:35.64), followed by junior Alexandra Lathos (16:39.96) and freshman Julie Vargas in 22nd (16:44.48).
Ramirez ran the 5K men's course in a time of 15:59.03, finishing 15 seconds behind race winner Nick Heath of Pepperdine. Senior Cameron Ford placed 12th (16:30.59), while fellow classmate Emilio Nunez finished seven seconds behind for 13th (16:37.79).
The 49ers return to action on Saturday, Sept. 17, traveling to the Inland Empire for the UC Riverside Invitational at the UCR Agricultural Operations Course.
