Long Beach, Calif. - Top singles player Maeva Razakasoa has picked up another weekly honor for Beach Tennis, named as the Big West Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week after her 4-0 performance at Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara. Razakasoa is ranked the No. 70 singles player in the country, and is on quite the hot streak for Long Beach State, helping the team to six consecutive wins.
The defining moment of last week's matches came in Santa Barbara, when Razakasoa was in a do-or-die match to secure a win for her team against the No. 65-ranked Gauchos. Playing in a hostile environment, Razakasoa overcame a 5-2 deficit in the decisive third set to pull out a win. She won the final five games of her matchup, storming back for a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 win over UCSB's Lou Adler to give the Beach a 4-3 team win and stay unbeaten in Big West play. A day prior, she topped Cal Poly's Zoe Oedekerk in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3.
Razakasoa has won six straight singles matches to push her season dual match record to 13-3. She has also won her last eight doubles matches alongside partner Julie Gerard. Their doubles record is 11-2 during the dual season, playing exclusively at the No. 2 doubles spot.
This is the second weekly award for Razakasoa this season, who also won back on Mar. 2 for her wins against UC Irvine and San Diego State. She is now a four-time winner in her career. Teammate Laura Eales earned Athlete of the Week back on Mar. 16 as the other winner for LBSU this season.
LBSU is back in action on Thursday at UC Riverside for a 1:30 p.m. match, then at home on Saturday at 11 a.m. to face San Jose State.
