Long Beach, Calif. - Two weeks before the start of dual match play, Long Beach State will host the Beach Tennis Winter Classic at Rhodes Tennis Center this weekend. The Beach will get one final weekend of competition at the friendly confines of Rhodes Tennis Center to get ready for the season opener, Jan. 30 against visiting San Francisco.
"We are very excited to start our spring season at home this weekend against three very good teams," said LBSU head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello. "We are going to play a lot of tough matches, which is the best way to prepare for our first dual match against San Francisco."
The Beach enters the weekend ranked No. 40 in the country, ahead of Oregon at No. 62 and Big West rival CSUN at No. 75. Denver's Julia O'Loughlin is the top-ranked singles player in the field, checking in at No. 62 in the country. In doubles, O'Loughlin and teammate Maureen Slattery are No. 44 in the national rankings, ahead of Oregon's pair of Shweta Sangwan and Kennan Johnson, who are tied at No. 59.
Each day, teams will face different schools as their opponents for singles and doubles, rotating throughout the weekend. The action begins at 10 a.m. each day with a total of eight doubles matches, then the teams match up with a different school for between six and nine singles matches, depending on team size. Long Beach State will face Oregon, Denver and CSUN in that order for doubles going Friday through Sunday, and will play Denver, CSUN and Oregon in that order for singles.
