Lakewood, Calif. - Long Beach State again pushed a team to extra innings, but for the second time Saturday it was the visitor that picked up the win, as Weber State dropped the 49ers 9-8 in nine innings.
Long Beach State (9-10) fell into an early hole against the Wildcats, as Amanda Hansen was unable to pick up an out in another tough outing for the senior. Weber State (8-6) started the game with three straight singles, and would ultimately score four runs on five hits and a walk before Hansen had to be pulled from the game.
Selene Polamalu entered for the Beach, and after getting out of the inning, held on for the 49ers over 5.1 innings of work, a career high for the junior.
Meanwhile, Long Beach State would chip into the Weber State lead. In the bottom half, the Beach returned the favor to Weber State's Morgan Allaband, starting off the game with a single and walk before back-to-back doubles from Haley Tobler and Lauren Lombardi, cutting the Wildcat lead to 4-3.
In the fourth, the 49ers pushed out in front with on a two-run single from Tobler, and after the Wildcats tied the game in the top of the fifth, Long Beach State again took the lead in the bottom half.
Julia Lombardi started the rally with a single, and scored on a double from Irma Sanchez. Sanchez then came home on a sac fly from Leilani Tupua-Tautalatasi, making the score 7-5.
Weber State answered by tying the score in the top of the sixth, and after neither team plated a run, the game went into extra innings.
After a scoreless eighth inning, Krystin Kubo gave the Wildcats the lead for good with a two-run home run, scoring the tiebreaker runner as well as herself on the only runs Christina Clermont would allow in 3.2 innings of relief with six strikeouts.
Lauren Lombardi doubled home Tobler from second to start the ninth inning, but Bailey Seek would retire the next three LBSU batters to hold on to the win for Weber State.
Long Beach State will return to campus Sunday to finish out the Long Beach Louisville Slugger Invitational against Southern Utah at 1:30 p.m. at the 49er Softball Complex, finishing off three games at the facility tomorrow.
