Dunne, Nunez Record Top-15 Finishes At Big West Conference Cross Country Championships

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Long Beach State cross country teams posted a pair of top-15 performances on Saturday morning at the Big West Conference Championships at UC Riverside's Agricultural Operations Course.
Juniors Kathleen Dunne and Emilio Nunez were the top runners for the Beach as Dunne finished in 12th place in the women's 6,000-meter race, while Nunez placed 15th in the men's 8K. Both runners recorded personal bests in their respective races as Dunne posted a time of 21:09.27, while Nunez recorded a 24:44.34.
The LBSU women's team placed sixth with 169 points, finishing just three points behind Cal State Fullerton (164) in fifth. The Beach improved by one spot from last year's Big West Championship as the 49ers finished in seventh with 177 points.
Cal Poly captured the team title with 39 points as the Mustangs won by 20 points over UC Santa Barbara (59) in second and 30 points over UC Davis (69) in third.
Sophomore Mikayla Florez posted a personal-best by 23 seconds with a time of 22:08.45 (35th), while juniors Ashley Carrera and Pauline Mandel placed 40th and 41st respectively. Carrera recorded a personal-best by 14 seconds with a mark of 22:16.56, while Mandel finished three seconds behind at 22:19.30.
Freshman Janet Salazar placed 54th with a personal-best 23:03.99, while junior Valeria Soto crossed the finish line in 60th (23:32.93) and sophomore Alexandra Lathos came in 66th (23:55.06).
On the men's side, LBSU placed fourth with 109 points finishing just two points behind third-place UC Davis (107).
UC Santa Barbara captured the men's team title with 31 points as the Gauchos won by five points over Cal Poly (36) in second.
Junior Sam Bautista recorded a personal-best by three seconds with a time of 24:56.33, finishing in 17th, while fellow classmate Kevin Ramirez finished in 21st (25:10.50).
Freshman Andres Barragan ran a personal-best by 12 seconds for a 25:11.17 (22nd), while senior Tim Bergstrom placed 37th (25:52.40).
Junior Cameron Ford finished in 51st (26:41.21), while freshman Angel Franco placed 57th (26:48.58)
LBSU returns to action on Friday, Nov. 13, traveling to the Pacific Northwest for the NCAA West Regional at Jefferson Park Golf Club hosted by the University of Washington.
