Kaltenbach, Lynde Lead 49ers Past Whittier College in Non-Conference Match

No. 8 Long Beach State topped Whittier College 15-8 in their fourth home game of the season. Chandler Kaltenbach and Duncan Lynde both scored hat tricks for the Beach as Patrick Goodenough added two goals of his own.
It was an eventful first period with eight goals scored, four from each team.
The Beach started off the match with a 2-0 lead. The first was off an exclusion from Whittier's Justin Pratt within the first minute of play, and redshirt freshman Chandler Kaltenbach put the 49ers on the board. LBSU drew a 5-meter penalty on Whittier's Wedge Molthen, putting the ball in redshirt freshman Austin Stevenson's hands, who connected for the Beach.
Eoghan Foley gave the Poets their first two goals of the match. Foley had the put back goal at the five-minute mark to put the his team on the board. In between his goals, teammate Pratt committed his second exclusion of the period that resulted in LBSU freshman Keegan Wicken's first goal, giving the 49ers a 3-1 lead. Foley notched his second goal of the match at the 4:14 mark after working inside, cutting LBSU's lead to 3-2.
Senior Zacchary Kappos extended the 49ers lead to 4-2 with a goal from the perimeter at the 2:40 mark. Whittier answered with a pair of goals, the first from Aiden Tol scoring from the inside, and the second from Massimiliano Mirarchi to tie the match with just 30 seconds left in the first period.
The 49ers had an opportunity to go up by one at the second half after drawing the one-man advantage with 17 seconds left, but LBSU's shot went off the crossbar, ending the period with both teams even at four.
The second period moved at a slower pace with only three goals scored, all by the Beach.
Chandler Kaltenbach scored his second goal of the match at the 4:36 mark of the second period, giving the 49ers a 5-4 lead. Sophomore Jacob Fujioka had his first goal of the match two minutes later, bouncing it off the water and into the back of the net.
Sophomore Lynde worked inside and scored his first goal of the match with just under a minute left to play, giving the Beach a three-goal lead going into the half.
The Poets struck first in the second half, trying to cut down LBSU's lead. Mirarchi scored his second goal of the match with less than a minute off the clock.
The 49ers drew an exclusion on Whittier's Tyler Fields, and Chandler Kaltenbach takes advantage scoring his third goal of the match to give the Beach the 8-5 lead at the 6:46 mark.
Lee Griffin is inserted into the match after a timeout by the Beach on a Whittier exclusion. LBSU didn't score on the man advantage, but got the goal on the next possession from Griffin, putting the Beach up 9-5 with his first goal of the match.
Gavin Kerr helped keep the Poets in the game with his first goal midway through the third period, putting Whittier down by just three.
LBSU picked up their offense, scoring three more goals to end the period. The 49ers got the ball to Lynde inside, who managed to put the ball in the back of the net despite being surrounded by three defenders.
Senior Dimitrios Lappas and redshirt freshman Troy Kaltenbach scored their first goals of the match, both off Whittier exclusions. The 49ers went into the fourth period doubling the scoring of the Poets, 12-6.
There was a goalie change for the Beach to start the final period with sophomore Caleb Schultz taking the place of Pavo Ljepopio, who had five saves in three periods.
Lynde completed the hat trick with another goal inside at the 6:38 mark to put the 49ers up 13-6. Goodenough had his activity in the fourth, scoring two goals in the period. One came off a 5-meter penalty from the Poet's Fatovic, and the second was an assisted goal from goalie Schultz, which gave the Beach a 15-7 advantage.
Austin Ringheim and Fatovic both scored goals in the fourth, but Whittier couldn't make up the deficit, falling to the 49ers 15-8.
Schultz finished with two saves in the match.
The 49ers improve to 8-10 overall, and Whittier falls to 13-7.
The Beach will travel to Malibu, Calif. to play No. 9 Pepperdine on Saturday, then return home for a double-header on Sunday against No. 3 Cal and Long Beach City College.
