LONG BEACH, Calif. - For the second year in a row, Long Beach State women's tennis sophomore Maeva Razakasoa began the spring season with Big West Player of the Week honors. Razakasoa earned the award on the strength of a pair of upsets last weekend.
Long Beach State opened its spring schedule with the annual Beach Tennis Winter Classic last weekend and a strong team showing was highlighted by Razakasoa's two upsets of nationally-ranked players. The Cranves-Sales, France native and reigning Big West Player of the Year played in the No. 1 spot for the Beach and played against every other team's No. 1 in the round robin tournament.
Razakasoa started the weekend with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over New Mexico's Emily Olivier, who is ranked as the No. 75 player in the country. On Sunday, she defeated Portland's Lucia Butkovska, who is ranked 60th. Razakasoa took the first set 6-4 and came away with the win after Butkovska suffered and was forced to retire with Razakasoa leading 2-1 in the second.
Julie Gerard paired with Razakasoa for doubles in the opening weekend and the pair went 2-1.
Razakasoa now has three upsets of nationally-ranked players this year, including one in the fall. She is 14-5 on the season. This is the second career weekly honor for Razakasoa, who opened last spring with the same weekly honors.
